Cultural Storytelling in Print: Poster and Apparel Design for Annual Pow-Wows
From 2021 to 2024, I served as the lead designer for the Lane Community College Native American Student Association’s annual pow-wow. Each year, I created a unique poster and matching t-shirt design that visually honored the event’s purpose, cultural symbolism, and intergenerational gathering. My work helped communicate key themes while balancing tradition, contemporary aesthetic, and print practicality.
2024: Minimalist Symbolism and Directional Colors
This year’s design emphasized simplicity through a minimal four-direction motif: white (north), yellow (east), red (south), and black (west). These colors were integrated into a clean visual structure, punctuated by stylized character art that added rhythm and narrative to the layout.
2023: Bright Celebration and Geometric Emphasis
The 2023 design leaned into vibrant jewel tones and geometric framing devices to reflect the celebratory spirit of the event. I incorporated natural motifs inspired by regalia patterns and beadwork. Strong typographic hierarchy and event clarity were central to both print and apparel designs.
2022: A Story in Layers
This first entry into the series used layered illustrations and bold central figures to give a sense of momentum and tradition. Designed during the return to in-person events post-COVID, the poster and t-shirt celebrated reconnection while honoring the event’s significance.
